What's equal to old LX shifters

I have a 1996 Norco Java with all LX components. I REALY need to go finaly swap over to V-brakes. The shifters I have are attached to the brake lavers, so I need to up grade them to more modern, V-brake compatible stuff. What level of Shimano 8- speed shifters are about the same lavel as my old non V-brake shifter/lever. Is old LX now equvilent to say...Deore or what. I found 8-speed XT shifter pods online, both shifters for $50. Is that good?

No I don't want to swap over to 9-speed stuff. I don't have the $$$ and I don't think its worth it right now.

Old DX grupo equal to new LX gruppo, when XT was top of the line....old LX probably just Deore?

are you looking to stick with shimano? If so check Ebay, and you could probably swing some deore xt shifters for around that price. If you're mind isn't set on shimano, sram 7.0 and 9.0 shifters are decent. (yes, even though they are the evil gripshift) I think they actually did make trigger shifters for a while....
Whatever you do, check ebay because i've gotten tons of parts there for half the retail price

XT shifters are very nice, too nice for the old Norco. XT is above LX. I would use the XT shifers only with new derailluers.

Then go the rest with Deore.


ALSO! Check out the SRAM stuff. Their higher end stuff is just as good, esp. for index shifting, and it's cheaper than XT. That would be for FR derailluers and shifters.
