29 Inch rims

I was wondering if I should get 29" or 26" wheels. I'm 6'3" and weigh 180 lbs. I ride primarily technical single track - lots of rocks, roots, and hills. What are the benefits and drawbacks ? Relatively new to the sport and race once in a while for sport. Thanks.

I think bigger rims have gotta help. Better rolling resistance, better handling. I think it will be a growing trend, especially for bigger guys. Your issue is a more restricted set of suitable tyres.

29 inch is the MTB term for 700c. While 26" is still the most popular choice, 700c seems to be slowely getting more popular

29ers have their advantage on smooth flowing tracks. The smaller diameter of 26" allows for better change of direction and quicker acceleration. If riding lots of technical single track as you say I would recommend 26"


Admittedly a 29er looks more normal on a big rider but a 26" MTB does also.

Someone gave me an article from mountain bike action that compared the performance of 29 to 26. There didn't seem to be many advantages - especially for the type of riding I do. Thanks for the replies.
