Hello, I am writing a paper for university on Europeans view/opinion of American cyclist/athletes. Especially if they feel the American's cheat to gain the #1 status. Thanks B.

Personally, I take each athlete as an individual. Lance was seen by some as a bit arogant, but is respected by (nearly) all for his strength and determination. Landis is viewed in a poor light after last years dope test, and will be remembered as a cheat if the allegations are true. However being American is irrelevant in that case, there are plenty of European dopers.
In the last Olympics some US athletes were criticised for lacking sportsmanship, for showboating etc, and the Ryder Cup team are viewed as arrogant beyond parody. Fo mthe time of Ali, arrogance may be seen as the most comon American failing but I suspect most of us take each person as an individual with their own strengths and weaknesses, and in a lot of US athletes a touch of arrogance is well balanced by sheer ability and focus.
