26.12.2006/ The legendary Passo di Gavia is often part of the Giro d'Italia and his 2621 metres have marked more than once the Cima Coppi, the highest point of the race. The Gavia became a legend on June 5th in 1988 when stage 14 of the Giro passed the Passo in a merciless blizzard. The legendary stage was won by Dutch rider Erik Breukink, with American and later winner of this Giro Andy Hampsten in second place. Cyclingheroes will publish a series of interviews with riders and team employees who were at the Gavia at June 5, 1988. The first interview is with Henk Lubberding, team mate of stage winner Erik Breukink in the Panansonic team.

The first interview is with Henk Lubberding, team mate of stage winner Erik Breukink in the Panansonic team. CH ....... You know I loved the article....... The pic of Lubberding is also fantastc. The Campagnoplo/Ti-Raleigh jersey he is wearing is the version I need to add to my collection yet. Do you have that pic of Lubberding available for sale?
The Andy H story of that particular day has to be one of the better legendary stories of professional cycling history. The thing people may not know is that Andy H came from a part of the US where the weather is cold and miserable like that day in the Giro on many days of the winter. The people from his home town would be upset if he would have climbed off the bike just because of the cold...lol.....

Hampsten did a great ride that day - but Breukink's win that day was superb too.

Agreed - I too am looking forward to reading about it some more.
Cycle Sport did some interviews with Andy a couple of years ago - he now lives in Italy and has his own vineyard in Tuscany.
I always liked Hampsten - his positioning on the bike and his pedalling action was the best I have ever seen (apart from Stephen Roche), in my opinion.
I have footage of him which I run for the kids in the cycling club - I use it to show them how to cycle properly.

Sorry to hear he got divorced - CS did a article on Hampsten in 2003 - he seemed pretty happy with his lot then.
