What would be the best way to achive the most upright siting postion on my trek 1000. My friend recommends me get a trek pilot 1.0 but I don't really want to buy a new bike.

Try changing the stem to one with a steeper rise. Some manufacturers (such as Ritchey) make adjustable stems so you can set how steep you want it to be. A shorter stem should also help.
