Hi All,
I've just spoken to the importer and the bikes are landing in Australia next week. Is there anyone else in this forum interested in buying this bike? I really like the specs of the bike but I don't like the bronze colour. It's a real problem because colour is very important to me - I much preferred the dark green of 94 and the silver/charcoal of 95. Who else has sacrificed the colour aspect for the bike they want?

One of the most important things if you're planning on touring are the wheels. I have had nothing but trouble with mine. They are quite cheaply built. The rack also can't handle weight. There are much better bikes in the price range. I suggest rei novarra rondonneur

I kept popping spokes on my rear wheel, and I finally replaced it. If you plan to carry a heavy load you'll probably want to replace the rack too. Other than that, I have been satisfied with the bike.
When I was in the market for a touring bike, the other one I seriously considered was the Bianchi Volpe. You may find that more aesthetically pleasing as well.
it's a good idea for any new off-the-rack bike you get to release all the stress off the spokes and then retrue the wheels by hand. the machines used to build wheels put the stress on the spokes in such a way that it's fairly common to have spoke problems with new wheels. i've heard many people complain about this or that brand's wheels. i don't know if the spokes or rims used on the fuji actually suck or not, just that it's not necessarily the case if you're breaking spokes on new machine built wheels.
while you're at it, you may as well go for a handful of heavier gauge ss spokes. i'd do this before deciding on a new set of wheels. ;)
I have an '04 Fuji Touring which had the same problems as mentioned with the wheels. A set of decent spokes and the bike carried me along the California coast and most recently on a loop of Australia.
I had no issues with the rear rack and I loaded it with crazy amounts of weight. In addition to all my gear in the Kimberley I had to carry 25kg of water and it held up fine.
