Choosing a bike

I'm looking at buying a bike at the moment and think I have narrowed it down to either the Gary Fisher Marlin or the Mongoose Meteore.

Does anyone know anything about one make or the other?? I have been told that Gary Fisher bikes are not good value for money but don't know if that's true or competitors trying to win business? I'm finding it hard to figure out which is a better overall bike.

Or if anyone can suggest any similar possibilities that may be good option.
