My parter at work, just turned 50, his 2 year old hip is still working.
My wifes aunt, a Karate Instructor had one about 12 years ago and another 2 years ago as the first wore out.
I hope and pray I never need one.

I had a hip replacement back in 1981. Someone told me it would last 20 years. This is its 25th year and it is bothering me a little and is sometimes sore, but I do not plan on having it repaired because among other things it does not interfer with my bike riding. Bike riding does not put a lot of strain on the hip. Look how well Floyd Landis rode with a bad hip. Five miles is a trivial ride. You will have no problem at all. I am 85 years old and ride ten miles almost every day after a bad year of ilnesses and am in the process of trying to increase my riding to hopefully twice that.

hello, just had my second total hip replacement in one year, after living with osteoarthritis for over 8 increasingly painful and disabling years. i am 49. i resumed cycling 8 years ago because my running habit became to harmful for my hips. i logged 50-100 miles /week prior to the first replacment las jan 06, but could not ride in the drops for more than a few seconds due to hip/back pain. two months after the 1st surg, i was able to ride the same mileage and more. riding in the drops was no longer painful. i had my second thr on 27sep. i ve been spinning with a class at my own rate and will resume riding real soon. cycling and swimming are the best things to do after a thr. good luck -UP THE MILEAGE.
I have a neighbour who had both knees replaced in Jan this year. Yesterday he bought a bike! I supplied a crankset and BB for it as he does not have full range of bend in the knees. After experimenting, he is fine with 160mm cranks on a Large bike. ;)
I have had a Birmingham [McMinn] Hip Replacement, which is basically a re-lining of the "wearing" surfaces of the hip joint. Try asking your consultant abount this before having your total hip replacement. As you need quite a lot of good quality bone left it it isn't possible for everyone to have this operation but if it is suitable for you then its a much better option [in my opinion].
After my op [two years ago] I'm back cycling for the first time in 10 years and am up to 30 miles at a time. I'm ski-ing at the new year for the first time with my new hip and can run [although dodgy knees limit this activity]. Jonah Barrington [the squash player] has had one and so has a chap called Dave Walker [I think] who became British heavyweight judo champion after having the op.
Have a look at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/hipsrus/ and www.mcminncentre.co.uk (http://www.mcminncentre.co.uk)
Good luck
