Mike Mentzer Heavy Duty
Well, this is pretty amazing stuff. I gained 12 pounds of solid muscle which is an incredible gain and something I never achieved before when I spent hours and hours doing set after set in the past. This is since I've been experimenting with Mike Mentzer methods.
If nobody knows anything about Mike Mentzer, I'll fill you in. He was, first and foremost, the main adversary of Arnold Schwarzennegger back in the early eighties and criticized the way Arnold S trained, pointing out that Arnold S was a genetic freak anyway (and would get huge no matter what system he followed).
Mike's system of training was to eliminate all the 20 set per bodypart split routines and replace it with super intense whole body workouts, doing just 4 sets per bodypart to failure. Sometimes he did only negative rep sessions.
I've been modifying some of this theory and have made a few adjustments but the principle remains the same. For legs I was doing just 2 sets of mind-boggling squats to total failure over a period of just 10 - 15 minutes. For back, just 3 sets to failure. For chest, 4 sets and for shoulder only 2 sets. Some of my workouts lasted less than an hour - sometimes closer to half an hour. However, the sessions were so intense, I sometimes threw up at the end or, on some occasions, fell asleep.
However, I gained 12 pounds of solid muscle. In the past I was doing split routines, huge amounts of sets and never made more than a pound of muscle gain.
I figure there has to be something in this scientific training Mike advocted but has now been abandoned by bodybuilders and sportsmen.
