He should never have pulled that stunt with his kids. However, his heart was in the right place and he did a lot to help protect animals. He knew a good deal about animals and, of course, was very entertaining in his presentation. In the end, his death came down to bad luck as he was carrying out a reasonably safe activity.I agree 100%, however it also be noted that there were 2 camera angles and the child appears much closer in one over the other. Most people would of only seen the camera angle that made the child appear to be closer.
Australia Zoo is where he has been put to rest.

I can't fault the guy for his heart being in the right place. I do think, though, that so much interaction with wildlife dulled his sense of caution to the point he was playing with fire too often.
Let's be clear: No matter how experienced you may be, animals will always have a vast physical advantage via evolution. There's not a cyclist on this forum who could outsprint a big cat or move fast enough to get out of the way of danger. Ask any Spanish matador. 96 per cent fight bulls daily without any tragic consequence but a small percentage have been nailed and gored.
Steve struck me as coming to believe he alone was immune.
I have a quotation I read where he stressed there was no way he would lose control with these crocs, gators or venemous snakes. He totally dismissed the whole idea he had put children in danger and then went so far as to say he wanted them to lose all fear of animals. Hell, we have this fear because we were evolved to have fear. The fear in us evolved because animals can be deadly.
The video shoot shows Steve with his eyes off the croc for 8 seconds at least and looking to his side nervously as he dangles the kid. If the croc had really wanted to, it could have taken his leg in just 2 seconds.
Anyone who believes he's faster than these wild animals or immune is kidding himself. That's what my brother used to say till he finally got stung by his lionfish. Now this latest news about people killing rays is madness. These animals were never intended to be observed up close and they cannot help being as dangerous as they are. Their sting is their only defence to stop them being wiped out by other predators. They are to be observed, but not approached.

Some big cats can run at 60 miles an hour. I have a hard time cycling at 27 mph.
My dog used to ram home the physical superiority of animals when we went jogging together. While I was red in the face busting my ass uphill, he would stop and watch me with curiosity, cock his leg up against a tree and then run off ahead.

My dog is so mean that if he takes a crap and it doesn't stack just right he kicks it over and craps again.

Not really. I'm more likely to find their kids doing a dump on my lawn. When I took that pic he was meant to be chasing a tennis ball, instead I got the "Kodak moment". Sadly the poor old mutt passed on earlier this year, and is up in doggy heaven.
Just hope Irwin isn't there dragging him around by the tail and yelling "crikey, look at this beauty!"

man i wish i still had my dog...those are the things that make life bareable.MP - I got my daughter a dog for her 7th birthday (Labrador / Kelpie X - the dog, not the daughter). Best present she could have had. He's a nutcase, so he fits in with the family perfectly. Daughter has taken to believing he's a reincarnation of my ol' dawg.

Daughter has taken to believing he's a reincarnation of my ol' dawg.i used to have a dog that i rescued as a puppy from an abusive household. He was starving when i took him. He was tied up to a fence in thier garden day and night til i could bear it any longer. I basically stole him. That was 14 years ago. He now lives with my brother but has glaucoma (the dog, not the bro) and is profoundly deaf through old age. He is a black lab mixed with a spaniel we believe but cannot be 100% sure. Very energetic and loves the water. And loved beer when he was a young dog but got drunk on just half a pint as he is less than 2 foot tall.
He always was particular about where he would crap. He liked nice well kept lawns in good neighbourhoods, he hated long grass and messy gardens.

I got her when I was inebriated. She was about 8 months old and her farmer / owner had broken her nose when letting fly at her. I got her off an Aussie who'd stolen her from the cocky. We had many happy years together (me and the dog, not me and the Aussie) until I flew her over to Aussie to be with me out working in the bush in WA. She took a dingo-bait (strychnine) and died a horrible death. Bugger.

...getting back on topic, though, don't we all see divorce lawyers more like those slimy eggs in "alien"...just waiting for it to pop open and then your stuck with a bony legged, acid spewing, throat-throttling thing on your face with some sort of umbilical cord down your gut until it finally falls off your face and when your out at dinner, all of sudden your ex-wife is breaking out of your stomach and your, like, dead on the table without having enjoyed a whole meal...or is it just me...?

I caught the last 15 minutes of the memorial service - one of the most moving things I've seen in recent years.
By comparison the public mourning at the death of Diana Princess of Wales was a mawkish display of competitive grieving.
Yes, Irwin was OTT, but what a great ambassador for wild-life. Sad he's gone, but happy that he was here.

To see Steve Irwin on TV was the way did things all the time, He was/is a remakable man, as you stated a great champion for wildlife, it's good he surrounded himself with like minded people, who like him are just as passionate as he was/is. His work will continue for many years, his lovely little daughter Bindi will eventualy carry on this work. She must however, be allowed to be a little girl first, then as time goes by and she grows, take over the mantle of her Dad.
He'll be missed not only here in Oz but all around the world, it's a sad loss to so many.

his wife has been on TV saying that the footage of Steve being killed will never be shown on TV.
There are lots of videos available on P2P networks showing this footage but the TV company have responded saying that there is only one copy and its securely locked. All internet sites claiming that they have the footage for download have false footage on file. I know people who have claimed to have seen it and say its false. I havent seen it and have no wish to.

I Have just watched a very brave woman tell her side of the tradegy that is Steve Irwin's death. The footage of his fatal wound will never see the light of day and the witnesses of this terrible accident are very close friends and colleagues who are of the same mind.
His work will continue in the safe hands of his wife Terri and eventually their daughter Bindi and their son Robert (Bob).
Terri has said that she will make Australia Zoo bigger and better than ever.

Tyler Hamilton is a doglover. When his dog died it virtually knackered his Tour. The dog was called Tugboat and the Hamiltons thought the world of it.
