liability for children cycling in Europe

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

I was cycling, in france back to our camper with my two children, my husband in front me behind the children :) when suddenly a car cut us up and made us pull over and demanded insurance details as they claimed that one of the children had scratched their car (they couldn't decide which child) when we didn't understand they called the police within 3 mins a police van with 4 officers and a squad car with another two pulled up (you wouldn't get that many for a murder in this country) they did a statement which I refused to sign and took our details. we now have their insurance company writing to us for insurance details. but we didn't have insurance does anyone know where we stand? :confused:
