Some of them don't seem to realise that, outside the US the term"communist" is much more likely to be regarded as a neutral description on political belief, rather than an insult.
I rather like it when people call me a communist...it immediately lets me know what sort of person I'm dealing with.
:D
Yes...you have a point.....you could almost make the same analogy about Brits and Scots and Aussies who hold Americans in such disregard simply because of their nationality.
That also tells me what kind of people I am dealing with.

:DI'm still completely anticommunist. Have you ever read The Captive Mind, by Czeslaw Milosz
It's a great little book about trying to lead a creative life under the thumb of the all powerful Soviet-communist state. Well written, revealing. From a Nobel prize winning poet. He was ambivalent regarding America, his adopted home, about which he wrote:
"What splendor! What poverty! What humanity! What inhumanity! What mutual good will! What individual isolation! What loyalty to the ideal! What hypocrisy! What a triumph of conscience! What perversity!" (from Milosz's A B C's, 2001)
(I love the internet.) Read the book if you get a chance....

You talkin bout me? "Communist" happens to be a term that William Morris was well aquainted with and he used it freely to describe his social philosophy. I don't blame him at all. Probably looked like a good option way back then.I don't think Lim's post was directed to you.As you say,Morris often described himself as a communist, but the term had a different meaning before 1917 and Lenin. The term "utopian socialist" has been used by others to describe him.

Don't you ever wonder why?
Plenty of other Americans, including ones on this forum, have been able to find a few answers to that one.

No I don't wonder why....It really doesn't matter why....I think most of it stems from jealousy. When it was the Roman empire..the world hated them, when it was the English empire...the world hated them.
That's life.
I don't judge you...because of what country you may or may not be from. I'll take you at face value until you prove otherwise...which in your case Steve...took about 2 posts.
If you aren't capable of the same thing then it's your loss...not mine.

You're exhausting. Obviously I was being sarcastic about Who cares then. Meaning, why do you care. I think it's clear that I care. I don't have to visit Iran to think that it is neither Utopia nor peaceful. Since you ask me that every single time I have an opinion about another country I will tell you that I have only been in North America. Canada, USA, Mexico. May I comment on them only?
I call people who disagree with me "wrong." I call people who quote communists and communist dogma, who admire communist leaders, who despise any effort to stop communism: communists. Perhaps some would prefer "sympathizers." Lenin called them "useful idiots."
Methinks you bandy about the term "communist" rather cavalierly.

Same here. It is usually is a derisive term from a person w/ a "right" read-conservative-leaning persuasion. Communism did look rather good on paper. Putting it into effect for large groups of people is another matter. I took micro/macro econ in college.

Anyone who has to make themself feel better...by belittling something as ridiculous as a couch....is a complete and total tool.
JMO...YMMV.
Does everyone here have ADD (not you, Bill)? I brought up the couch story for a purpose. The letter at the beginning of this thread was an attack on the entire economical system of America and greed and credit card debt and blah blah blah. So I just posed an ordinary situation that got lots of responses about stupid details of the couch. Instead of the fact that we all buy stuff we like and it doesn't make us enemies of the world. Of course he has to try to belittle me because he can't do it intellectually, and he can't attack my spelling. So, now I guess I'm poor white trash because I think several thousand dollars is insane to pay for a couch (which I did anyway). So much for the empathy of the "ordinary citizen."

Which couch ? And in which of my houses?
not bad for a "communist" eh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Western communists are the ultimate hypocrites. Try Jane Fonda and John Kerry. They're not doing too bad either.

I beleive the "T" in your signature-Peace Through Superior Firepower-is not supposed to be capitalized. Incidentally, a sig. like that begs the question-are you in the military or its associated industrial complex  I once was.

As opposed to being called fascist every other post? Anyone to the right of Michael Moore is a fascist in this forum. And why is everyone so defensive about being called a communist?

I thought it was amusing for its anti left wing establishment humor. That's all. I felt I wasn't being extreme enough to fit in. I'm already sick of it anyway.
I am not in the military or the complex but i have relatives that are. If I tell you anything else, I'll have to kill you. ;)

In the immortal words of R. Limbaugh-speaker for the right- "words mean things". Throwing @ the term "communist" & not knowing the person one is directing the pigeon-hole, assertion at is not illuminating or instructive/constructive for anyone here.

Lets start with the collective ownership of property, which will inevitably be proceeded by a forced confiscation...
Lets just forget about the sheer folly of trying to centrally manage the chaos of production and distribution of every single good and service we find useful.
Don't even think about the central accumulation of raw power that's a requirement if you want to organize a command economy.
And... I would personally rather not think about the sort of wicked sleazebags that will inevitably gravitate toward that kind all-reaching power.
Surely these items are thought out, on paper, before being implemented.
Communism looks terrible on paper.
On the other hand, I'm all for completely voluntary communal forms. I've lived and loved co-ops, myself. The key difference is that theres a genuine social contract in a voluntary co-op. Opt in? Opt out? Your choice. Not so with a sovereign gov't.
