$3,500 = €2,700.
We all pay taxes : standard rate here is 42% plus social insurance of 7.5%.
So you're no exception. Sorry.
No - that makes you someone who thinks $3,500 is a significant amount of money and has to save that money in order to buy your couch.
No - that makes me an "ordinary citizen." My point about the taxes, is that it takes two people to make one income. We lived on one. That's okay, our choice, but that means four grand for pretty furniture is a significant amount of money. Is that supposed to be an insult. My car is 10 years old too, so you can look down on me some more.

I shouldn't be happy? I should spend my life trolling the internet in agony, wringing my hands about things I don't have control over?...Sounds like you should be quite happy about your life. But I don't think you should be at all happy about the way the 45% of you income is being spent. (Among the other things the Bush clan is doing.)
Democracy requires work, thought, consideration, and anger at injustice. Doesn't mean you have to let it infect your otherwise great life.
Now, regarding the couch, since you asked: $3500!!! holy crap! Sitting must be a very high priority for you. I can sympathize somewhat. I used to own a very chaming 1911 late victorian/early craftsman house. I put a lot of money and effort into restoring it. Never could get myself to shell out for period furniture, though.

You're exhausting. Obviously I was being sarcastic about Who cares then. Meaning, why do you care. I think it's clear that I care. I don't have to visit Iran to think that it is neither Utopia nor peaceful. Since you ask me that every single time I have an opinion about another country I will tell you that I have only been in North America. Canada, USA, Mexico. May I comment on them only?
I call people who disagree with me "wrong." I call people who quote communists and communist dogma, who admire communist leaders, who despise any effort to stop communism: communists. Perhaps some would prefer "sympathizers." Lenin called them "useful idiots."
You were being sarcastic?
Didn't come across that way - I have to say.
You're free to comment on anything you like - but your remarks about Iraq and Venezuela were condescending, I thought, given that you have never been to either country.
As regards calling people communists - you accused me of being a communist
without any basis for doing so.
I'm not a communist sympathiser either.

I'm not looking down on you.
I was simply making the point that buying a $3,500 quid couch and feeling "bourgoise" - seems to be a struggle having had to save for it.
I was also making the point that we all have to pay taxes - they're inevitable.

Well, my house is very small, so I can swing it (the chair is a reproduction Morris chair. I could die!) And Mission is popular at the moment, so you can find some stuff like at Target, the greatest store ever achieved in retail commerce. Anyway, I was just using it for an example, because we already have said couch because my husband got a bonus at work for being (I'm whispering now) profitable. Without screwing anyone. Whaddaya know.
I liked your comment about not letting "it" infect your life. You can care and not go down in flames.
And NO, I will never be happy with how anyone, including Bush, is spending my money. I would be in favor of taxes if they were efficient by any means, but since they are going to throw it all in a big black hole, I want it back.
geez, how much do you think Lim's couch cost?

Lim's couch.... hmmm. What do you sit on at home, Lim?
My couch was free. But I don't really like it. Black fake leather. Yuck.

You directly replied to one of my posts - and stated the term communist.
Because I have visited your country on half a dozen occasions - does that make me a capitalist?

my ability to have an informed opinion on Cuba by pointing out that I have never been there.
Why is it OK for you to have an opinion on Iraq (without personal knowledge of the place),but not me?
Please...keep it honest.

We have a very nice couch at home - it's a four seater and it's made of oak and it's very comfortable.

Anyone who has to make themself feel better...by belittling something as ridiculous as a couch....is a complete and total tool.
JMO...YMMV.

William Morris is usually described as a "Utopian socialist".....just to be pedantic (this is the internet after all!).
There are a variety of opinions across the Left political spectrum.George Orwell (Eric Blair) was very left-wing,but he was no communist, and he was fiercely critical of them,as was Andre Malreaux.
I'm not a communist either!
For the record,I prefer to sit on a bike saddle. :D

I think Steve, the problem here is that our friend made an assumption based on little or no information.
Which makes one wonder.
I think the term Communist is regarded by some Americans as a term to try to insult people who they disagree with.

I think the term Communist is regarded by some Americans as a term of abuse. You talkin bout me? "Communist" happens to be a term that William Morris was well aquainted with and he used it freely to describe his social philosophy. I don't blame him at all. Probably looked like a good option way back then.

I think the term Communist is regarded by some Americans as a term to try to insult people who they disagree with. Some of them don't seem to realise that, outside the US the term"communist" is much more likely to be regarded as a neutral description on political belief, rather than an insult.
I rather like it when people call me a communist...it immediately lets me know what sort of person I'm dealing with.

Not you.
I was referring to our couch buying friend.
I am not familiar with William Morris - so you have me at a disadvantage, I'm afraid.

Could he have been the famous wallpaper man? We had a bloke who pushed a cart about his name was Billy Morris, he collected scrap metal and cloth.
Any relation?
