If you didn't have a home computer to download and analyze you're workouts, how useful would a PowerTap be? What information would be available from reviewing just the on-bike computer?

What information would be available from reviewing just the on-bike computer? It wouldn't quite be a toy, but it would be a lot less useful. You would still get some basic pacing information for intervals, but I think it would be useless during an actual race. You could track progress based on pencil-and-paper records of average power over intervals of various lengths.

I personally think it's impossible to get value for the money using a powermeter without ponying up for a copy of CyclingPeaks. YMMV.

if you're looking at the PT SL as the title implies then why not just get one of the cheaper PT models and buy an ultra cheap, or used desktop with which to just run CPS?

Thanks for the replies. The thing is I went ahead and ordered a PT SL but I forgot to first check what I'll need to use any training software - I'm still running Windows 98. :o And I'm now kind of bankrupt for the next while.

Scan your local craigslist... it'll run just fine on a PIII running windows 2000. You should be able to pick one of those up for $50-75 (probably with a monitor).

PC nowadays are going cheaper and cheaper, you just need to do some searching and eventually you'll find a bargain. The bottom line, PT is just an expensive cyclocomp without the data you collect that goes with it. Good luck!
