I feel both sad and elated simultanously Wattsy. In answer to your question though.....Orange....and 3-2.5 Ti and carbon composite. :)
Kotter, I know exactly what you're saying. Like I said, I'm not having a go. I was a uni student once myself and rode a Kinesis frame with a 140mm quilled stem and a Mavic gruppo I traded for some some jersey designs. We've all been there.
You'll look back in fondness....but you won't want to go back.
I mean back to those bikes, not shagging Uni students. :)

Hahahaha. I have three bikes and I know them all fondly as "The Bitch".

Wattsy, sorry to hear the news mate, but hoping it all works out sweet from here. A nice custom Thylo frame sounds like a good type of therapy! :D
Might be up for a Melb group (or "gang" if AntG is to be believed) ride if I can remember how to do it. Been seriously lacking motivation lately.
Thanks Wil...I'm tyred of hurting. It's time I look to the future.

Any ideas why there are still threads on this forum that are blatant advertisements for Nokia. I thought advertising was against forum rules

If I was to do any HR Zone training do i need a flash HR monitor, or will an old, basic Polar do? It is too crappy to display time in zones etc....

How about one of these (http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=O2041)
No idea what they're like, just noticed them when I was nosing around the website the other day.

If I was to do any HR Zone training do i need a flash HR monitor, or will an old, basic Polar do? It is too crappy to display time in zones etc....Here's how it works (the simple story)...
you find a nice, safe, flat circuit and you ride it watching you HR, making sure you stay in the prescribed HR zone. No need for a flash unit to do that, you just keep watching to be sure you are staying within the target zone. The next step is to translate that into the hills where everything HR-wise turns upside down unless you're a naturally talented and borderline anorexic freak.
After a while the frequency with which you loook at the HRM will decrease. You will intuituvely know which HR zone you are in. Then one day (if you;ve been following the program properly) you think "bugger me, I'm doing XXkmh and it feels so goddamn easy", then you'll look at your meter and think "fark, I'd better step on it, my HR sez I'm just about asleep here!".
After a coupla years in the saddle a HRM becomes more or less irrelevant. Your brain can work out what's needed just by sensing the overall feeling from the rest of your body. And in a race situation an HRM becomes a hindrance rather than an aid, so it's better to forget about wearing the strap and just concentrate on racing.

Wilchemy, that's called "Rating of Percieved Effort" and there was an article about it in one of the cycling mags recently (I think it was Bicycling Australia) - will chase it up and let you know which one, if you're interested.
But right now, I'm off to watch some violence and adult themes on SBS. :D

Thanks jock. Looks like my HRM would be okay then.
Cheers for the link, matagi - I think that one is pretty much the same functions as I already have, which it seems is good enuff.

Sorry wilco, after all that dribble I didn;t actually answer your Q.
You don't really need need a flash unit undernormal circumstances. It's amazing to be able to watch, analyse, and learn from HR graphs. But you really, really have to be into that sort of shit to be bothered with it. It can be fiddly and annoying, and at the end of the day you can only learn from it for about 6 months. After that you don't need to see the pretty pictures or figures to know what's going on.
However, if you have a history of health problems or a hereditary predisposition to major organ failure, stroke, etc. then it's probably very useful to carefully watch you HR at the finest possible granularity JIC.
One other thing to be careful of is maxHR. Most of us will never actually reach our true maxHR, however the number that's in your head (eg. observed at the end of a 1km+ race finish sprint) is probably a decent indication of your limit of (discomfort) tolerence. It's usually a whole lot lower than true maxHR. So watching an HRM during a difficult training session/race can be counter-productive. Your brain will thing "fark, I'm getting close to maxHR, I'd better slow down" when you can probably sustain that load for 20-30 mins if you're willing to "take the pain"

Then you've missed a great ep of a series on gravity, EM, an dstring theory for beginners. Rock on astrogeeks.

Nah, had enough of that when I did physics for the HSC, although the string theory hadn't been fully elucidated then. Mr Matagi is the astrophysics geek, I was always better at chemistry.

hehe I've been told I have a weak heart by my mates when i whinge in the hills, but I don't think they have any medical qualifications to back up their diagnosis! :D
thanks for the answers too.

My coach always had a kind word for me when I was in agony whilst climbing hills with him. "Take it like a lamb" he would snigger. He still brings that one out from time to time. Nice

LOL - like that one.
On another subject, I wonder if classic1 went and checked out the Tour of Gippsland?
