The Thread about Nothing....
The big problem with the roadie gang is that they're even bigger brand whores than the MTBers. 90% of them will quite happily shell out 7 grand for a piece of shit Bianchi thinking it's actually good, but 7 grand on a handmade custom bike from a freaky streetwise design company from Melbourne is a slightly harder sell.
The Seppos are fine - they think we're freakin' cool (except ones named after beverages), are happy to take a punt on new and interesting companies and have the disposable income. They're also much more used to buying stuff 'mail order' or sight-unseen as they have a long an illustrious history of buying stuff from mailorder catalogs and now simply via the Net on good advise from their peers.
Most Beach Rd guys either ride a Cannondale or Trek like everyone else, or ride a Ridley coz Robbie does or ride a Look because some Aussies at some stage might have ridden on them for Credit Agricole.
I mean, the economist in me says ignore the local market and concentrate on the Yanks and Frenchies and Germans coz that's where the cash and the interest is, but secretly I'd trade all that in for some more locals doing their thing on our gear.
Call me a sentimentalist

Talk is cheap. Anyone actually buy one on his recommendation?
Dunno, haven't heard from him for a few weeks.
Anyone who even hints that they might be perhaps considering a titanium frame maybe one day, I point in the direction of Thylacine Cycles. Who knows? One of them might even buy one.

Now that's an interesting thing, coz if I were shelling out 7 grand for a bike, I'd want it to be so customised it fit every one of my nooks and crannies. :p
No way at those prices would I be going big brand off-the-shelf bike, in fact I would WANT something nobody else had. Why be like every other idiot? But that's just me and sorry to say, I'm not in the market for a custom Ti bike right now.

How did Teschner become popular? Just through Triathletes, then Time-Trialists, and finally Trackies?

Well when I can afford a custom build, Tiger's going to be at the top of my list. I have a feeling I'll still only be a B grader on a good day though :D

HA HA :D YES!! And so are ACR!! How did you know? What's the deal with them? Pleeeez fill me in. I've nearly bought one about 3 times. Are they lemons? ACR have about 10 of them
Just leftovers from when the team dissolved. Great bikes....buy one.
But I'm a biased former De Rosa owner. :)

Bernie O'Dea maybe? Former Bendigo boy, dunno where he's living now.
If its him, bloody good rider. He raced a most of a track season about 4-5 years ago after a long lay off, was placing in Aces almost straight away in Victoria.
+1.
Great trackie....like most kids from the bush.

How did Teschner become popular? Just through Triathletes, then Time-Trialists, and finally Trackies?Yeah, basically. He also imports Easton tubing and parts too, which means he can price everyone out of the market, which makes it a bit easier for him. Which is why I buy nothing locally except spare inner tubes. Retail prices for raw materials? I think not.
I don't know why he shifted from Ti to Aluminium though. That's the direction the mass merchants went and his alignment with Leggera shows he clearly has aspirations there, but why he didn't stick with Ti is anyones guess. I suspect though the market wasn't ready for it. Actually I've never seen a TiSports so I don't even know how many were made even before the shift to Alu.
There used to be a local mob called Ultralite Titanium back in the late 80's that were making Ti frames from CP Ti which in retrospect is a bit frightening.
Oh, someone earlier metioned a Carbon shortage or something? That actually is true. The 'War on Terror' has mean a lot of the Carbon and Ti production has shifted back to the Military suppliers. I've been waiting on pre-production samples of some carbon bits from a client of mine since December and they're still not ready, and with the last two Ti frames we did I literally had to scour the globe for some 38mm downtubes because everyone had run out.
As a raw material Ti has gone up heaps, too. I've recently had to raise the prices of the Ti Tephras and Aretes slightly to cover it. I mean, a frikken downtube is 150 bucks alone.

you want some super fast A grade goons to ride a Thylo or do you want someone who really cares about helping you promote the bike? I've been in teams where guys have been given deals on bikes or free bikes and they really couldn't give two shits, they just ride whatever they can get their hands on.

I can remember racing blokes riding those frames. Know bugger all about the material (CP Ti?) but the frames looked ok. Welds seemed alright, angles look right, etc.

Gaysus it's taken half a bludy day to catch up with this thread.
Anyway, I can't wait to get back on the bike. I've been training for the City to Surf and I'm jack of it. The body just can't take much more. And I had an absolute shocker last night. I've been training for 3 months building up to the distance. Trying to change the load around by doing long days then short days, but not really changing intensity. Doing around 4 days a week. But yesterday I had nothing. It was only my second day into this week but my legs felt dead and I couldn't get my heart rate up. So with only a fortnight to the race what do you fellas rekon I should do to try and get right for it? Have an easy week, or do something completely different like sprints? Or riding even?
Yeah I know it's not cycling but the principles must be the same. Help a poor hoofer out.

Sponsorship and support isn't in my mind about 'mutual using'. This isn't just a business for me, which is why I'm even keen to help out guys that have a good attitude and are well liked and respected - lifestyle riders. It's not super important which grade you ride.
I support a local guy who rides in the Dirt Crits here and he's a talented guy who's racing A Grade without any training. He didn't even ride before I met him and now he's just ordered his third Thylacine. He's more friend than hired gun, he's enthusiatic, has a great attitude, and that's exactly what I'm after.
Just a roadie version perhaps, although I'm not too concerned with that at this stage. It's more about finding the right person(s).
I'll look into '12 month lending' a bike to a rider, but as the frames are custom it's kinda difficult on the resell. Certainly it's more viable on the road, so I'll look into it, see what the bank manager says.

That's not me, that's a customer - Will from Chicago - and his custom fixie.
Top tube slops slightly down towards the front for the pseudo funnybike look.
This is me. Check out the right leg -

I'm not checking out any blokes legs  Bloody heck. 5 days in and TAN is batting for the other side ("not that there's anything wrong with that!")! ..and yet I digress.
I was going to ask why such an excessively lazy ST angle for a trackie (looking at the TT/ST joint). A degree or two of TT slope explains it. Was he riding it on the track or just as a road fixie?
