Help what did I sign up for? LOL

A buddy of mine convinced me (the very newbie racer) to enter a crit in a neighboring town tonight. Sounds like fun we race 3 times per class but they have names for some of the races...crit I understand but can somebody enlighten the newbie on what these races entail?
