Real WSD bikes vs marketing thing?

Which bikes are really built for women and which are just made smaller and labeled "for women"?

Just wondering.. and do you think that WSD bikes really are beneficial for women or is it just another marketing thing?

Btw, I'm 5'3 and I'm looking for a bike just for a commute and am just wondering bout this since a couple LBS folks have put me on a WSD bike and one mentioned that a certain well known manufacturer just relabel smaller bikes as women's with no real science behind it. Of course it was one he didn't carry but had worked with in the past.
