View Full Version : Why eat salads?
I keep hearing about how salads are healthy but I'm looking at the nutrition info for a bag of pre-made salad and it shows that one serving has only 20 calories, 1% carbohydrate, 1g protein. It does have 80% vitamin a, 25% vitamin c. I thought cyclists need lots of carbs, protein and calories (energy, right?)? This seems like food with no purpose. I don't see how it can satisfy a hungry cyclist and give him the energy he needs.
I think salads are mostly fibre, which is good as well. They add interest to all the pasta/rice/potatoes I eat for energy!
i personally don't like salads, but i think the key to being healthy is to have a balanced diet.

The pre-made salads are starter kits for meals or side dishes. I always add stuff to them. With it being so hot now, I throw in some chopped up ham & cheese for protein and serve it with a crusty whole wheat roll for dinner. You can also add roasted turkey breast or grilled chicken for different flavors. Sunflower seeds also add a little crunch. Nuts & fruit offer a nice flavor blend with the salad. Try some walnuts & mandarin orange slices. Just right for a light summer supper.
To be a cyclist you need to stay healthy. If you eat just carbs you are not getting all the essental nutrition you need to stay healthy. Even though vitamins may not give you a good energy boost they give you a healthy body not eating veggies and fruits can effect skin, eyes, hearing, emune system and muscular repairment. Not eating them would just be dumb.
