I am thinking about getting a track frame. I have a pair of cranks that are a tripple from my old road bike. Can I take of the 2 rings and use them as cranks on my track frame? Also what about wheels, will I need track wheels?

You'll need special chainring bolts to take up the gap that is created by having taken off the extra 2 rings. This is easier to do with a double, as you can find bolts specifically for that purpose sold online. Not sure about with a triple?? Although you could try putting the single ring on the middle position and attempt to adjust the chainline form there. The easiest option is to get a single crank, however...Harris Cyclery has 'em for cheap:

You can use your road wheels if you add spacers to get the correct chainline. However, it won't (of course) be truly fixed, ie, you will be able to freewheel, so they won't be legal for use in track competition (and would be dangerous as well for any cyclist behind you).

Why not just buy a second hand track bike

Why not just buy a second hand track bike

I bought mine secondhand for $250 and some spare wheels for another $50 from ebay.

Much easier than trying to cobble something together.

Geoff, how many track bikes do you have?

Edit: Sorry I thought this was Geoff's thread.

I did exactly the same as Geoff, I also paid $250, just needed to replace the screws that hold on the chain ring $6 and get new handle bars (free from a friend). Now I need to learn how to ride on the track.

Hi Mike,
I've got 2 of them.
One I paid $250 for which I have installed a front brake on I ride around on as a trainer. The other one I paid only $150 for but the seat tube is dented and I had to buy a couple of tubulars for it which cost $90.

Cheers
