shimano deore SIS shifters

I think the techie at my LBS is giving me bull by saying that the front derailleur shifter WILL not shift to the largest (outermost crank) without me pushing while HOLDING the shifter for a couple of seconds. what gives? I thought the indexing should shift to all gears automatically. Please correct me if Im wrong, im a born-again cyclist.

Sorry, but I gotta side with the shop. I've also experienced that with lower-end shifters, it seems that if you set the limit screws so that it will shift with no holding then you get the odd over-shift that shifts it right off the rings.

There's a reason the high end stuff is big $$$, more engineering, ramped rings, closer tolerances on how much cable is pulled etc.

I don't have to on mine. It seems to me the chainrings would be more critical then the der. The der. is just moving and lifting the chain so the teeth can grab it. I have a Truvativ Blaze crankset with a Deore front der. and I don't have to hold the shifter down. Now my chainrings have pins and ramps to lift the chain so I am sure that helps.

Hedgedog is correct there. I have to do that with my deore shifter...but that might be because it is a little bent and i dont have the $$ to replace it.:rolleyes:

Common problem with lower end bikes. Especially with off-brand cranks.

The Deore is not a low end unit.
Week springs, out of adjusted stop or sticky cable or as another writer said, you bent it. It aint rocket science, get it jacked up and run it through the gears, see what it's doing, if you have to push the thing then something is hanging it up.
Stop to tight, cable drag, bent or worn out parts.
Clean it up and make sure those cables are moving.
You will fix it.
