Plus size cycling gear?
Hey Ladies,
I was wondering if any of you know of wear I could get some plus size cycling gear. I just started cycling, I'm 5'7", 180lbs and a size 16/18. I was looking for some womens padded shorts and ended up buying some Canari Mens. I was just wondering if there are any other plus size cyclists out there and if there are any other options than skin-tight spandex out there. I understand that the padded shorts have to be spandex, but I will be wearing them under some other type of pant. Maybe after I loose some weight from cycling I will make my peace with spandex.

Hi there,

I share your apprehention (sp??) to spandex. I too wear my padded cycling shorts under other conventional sporting shorts for the time being. I have seen however, that you can buy other shorts (I think they say more recommended for mountain biking) that are like cargo or other types of shorts with a padded insert. You can also buy other jerseys that are meant to be a looser fit..... may have to stay away from the ladies versions as they all seem to be small sizes.

Just check out as many bike shops as you can.... don't worry what anyone else says if you're not wearing the latest road cycling gear. You need to feel comfortable riding otherwise you won't stick to it.

Hope this helps some.

Trish

Here's where you can get those mtn bike / 'cargo' type shorts with the pad, and cheap, too! ;) http://www.ecyclingstore.com/bicycle-shorts.php?PHPSESSID=4fb247a9399b108e3c99abe2cbb0ab15

Hiya,

Thanks Jessica for starting this thread. I am a little shorter than you, but same weight and a newbie.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, can convince me to wear shorts of any description at this stage! So am really keen to find some padded 3/4 pants that aren't super tight around the calves.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

This post caught my eye because I'm also overweight....more so than you. I'm about 5'8" and currently 200#. There is no way I'm going out in public in spandex! LOL

Thanks for the link, I checked another link for the loose-fitting shorts and they were MUCH more expensive!

Have you tried a combo skirt short? Padded shorts but it looks like a skirt. For those of you who can bring yourselves to say the word, skort, you'll be one step ahead. It comes in a few colors, but I believe XL is sold out for all but the coral print.

cycling skirt and shorts (http://www.honourwood.com/bicycling/) I'm not too heavy, but I'm not fit for TV either by TVs standards:mad: Which is sometimes all the cycling clothing I can find. I did find a cycling skirt that I can rave about. They go up to a 36" waist, but are adjustable an inch or two in either direction You wear it over your own lycra shorts instead of having them together.

I'm going to write a review of it in the review sections, there is nothing but a few pairs of unisex shorts in there now

Part of the secret is reframing the problem - so admire your calf muscles and worry less about your thighs. Large t- shirts can help and also realizing that it isn't your job to be eye candy for strangers - and your friends can put up with less than perfect. I'm 5'5", weigh 230 (used to weigh 260 - I love my bike) and i love spandex.
A bulky t shirt increases wind resistance - but I'm not out to set records right now. spandex is comfortable - fits like skin and doesn't chafe - so wear it - physical comfort is key.

I have already gone to some of the sites mentioned in this thread--they look like there's a few more than I thought. There still aren't enough, though. There are a lot for 'XS' sizes!!

I am a plus size cyclist and these are the places I get my clothing. I ride year round and could not find a jacket or wind pants to wear until I discovered Junonia. I get my shorts from Team Estrogen. They have the mountain bike shorts that have the padded insert over hiking style shorts. Very comfy.
