It's killing me but..........
Alright, because everything seems dead right now. I just thought I'd post and say I'm in "addiction to training" mode right now.
I'm sitting at my desk after 10 hours of wonderful weather and riding this week so far and all I can think about is getting back on the bike tomorrow. Weather was warm enough to keep the top layer off and soak up some sun.
What's a post like this without pictures?!

With help of certain 'others' or was it one :), I developed a one-time procedure that allows the CT to be 'aligned' with one's PM of choice. I won't say calibrated as that implies that PM is 100% accurate to start with.
I was much happier when I dialed my CT to match my PT back then and haven't had reason to tweak it since. The biggest delta I currently see is perhaps 5W when doing a long hard L4 interval and most of that is due to ergo drift/heating over a long period (despite my external cooling fan). For shorter or less intense work, they usually match to within 3W or < 1%.
p.s. No I don't work for Racermate :)But, this procedure is not on Racermate's website? Can you post the procedure? I'd love to have that. I'm planning to get a CT and I would want it to agree with my PT SL (at least within a watt or two).

I can fwd to you via email. It's not "racermate approved" but it's not going to harm your CT either. I sent it out to 6-10 people without any negative feedback.

Actually I don't as I find these plenty hard enough anyway .. and I do mean that! I use a small external cooling fan which does a good job at say tempo power levels but now that I'm targetting FTP or slightly above I find I'm getting that drift. I suspect it's a matter of wheel speed and absolute power levels and at 85kg ... I'm getting there.
I don't use the CS software - just use the handlebar controller so I *could* bump up the power 5W halfway through - if someone were standing there with a gun that is :)

If you're referring to me, the only credit I'll accept is for being a PITA. :D

I suspect they'd hire you before they hired me. ;)

Yes perhaps we both were that to Racermate but it got the job done :)
I don't know much about the Velodyne but do you get measurable power drift on there in ergo mode and with long intervals?

As Nomad posted some pictures, I thought I'd do the same.
This is the view from the carpark at the top of my 15% climb I always mention. I live somewhere in the urban sprawl visible below.

Tyson, what are you power numbers at the moment? Are you going to announce them when you receive the 300 watt? Or? I am very interessted in how your progress is going.
Today I did my fourth training. 2x 20minutes of L4. It was pretty intensive. I suffered most during the period: 5 to 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes I knew I already did 50% of the interval.
What my FTP is I still don't know. In WKO+ I use 240watt at the moment. Today I did:
T 20:33, AP 242, NP 242, HF 177, C 106, TSS 34.9, IF 1.009
T 20:27, AP 254, NP 254, HF 181, C 105, TSS 38.2, IF 1.059
Peak 60 minutes: AP 221, NP 228
What should I use as FTP? Still the 240 watt?
And about my training program. I want to cycle 4 days a week. Should I do 2 L4 trainings and 2 L3 trainings to build some base? I find that I don't recover fast from these rides.

At the moment Paul I'm just ticking over before deciding which way to go trainer-wise. It's just too hot to do 20 min intervals in the gym at present.
I thought I had it all sown up, that is until I visited my LBS yesterday and saw one of the Elite trainers. The trainer I saw was relatively cheap and combined with a power meter would seem to be the ideal solution.
However, upon checking Elite products on the internet,I came upon the Real Axiom trainer, whilst being quite a bit more expensive than other Elite trainers, at 495pounds is somewhat cheaper than the Compu trainer. The only thing I can't find, is any reference to being able to read off your power figures.:(
I've got to stop procrastinating soon or before I know it the Fukui 100 miler will be upon me and I won't be as fit as last year.

I wonder if it's the same as this?

It's not an SRM but at least it might have repeatability.

Not all trainers are created equal. Some trainers (even fluid trainers) don't maintain a constant resistance as the unit heats up. Some trainers are incompatible with the PowerTap. If you're going to scan the web and buy a trainer based on manufacturer claims, all I can say is -- you're nuts! Virtually any trainer or power meter product you might want to consider is or has been owned and used by members of this forum. You will get many strong endorsements for the KK, CycleOps 300PT, CompuTrainer and the Velodyne. I'm not sure you will get that sort of endorsement on some other models. But, hey, if you want to go your own direction, knock yourself out.

C'mon Tyson, apparently 20 mins on a trainer isn't that much

"........An Illinois man may have ridden his way into the Guinness Book of World Records, but he didn't ride anywhere. Instead, 49 year old George Hood spent 85 hours on a stationary bike at a Burr Ridge, Illinois sports club in an attempt to have his name written into the book. The record still needs to be certified by the Guinness book officials, but his mark surpasses the previous record of 82 hours......"

If you want the most bang for your buck get the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine with power computer. With all the talk about heavy flywheels maybe get the Pro model which can be changed from 6 lbs to 18 lbs (interested to here RD's opinion on the Pro model). You might want to get some spare batteries for the computer I think the battery is going dead on mine after only 3 months it is reseting to defaults every few minutes as I use it. It's a Lithium "CR1225" and I could only buy them over the internet no one around here stocks them. Looks like my 3 month gains will be posted a little late.:(

My friends were joking me because I bought a 300 dollar trainer, while I only spent 700 for my bike.
My reply... Yeah the bike was cheap but I'm gonna build it a heck of an engine!

I think the 18lb flywheel is worth the $100 price delta. The next best bang for the buck is the KK Pro with PT (any model). And next up the ladder is the CompuTrainer Pro with or without a PM. My personal preference would be the CT Pro w/PM (in part because I will always have a PM), but I realize that the ergometer function is not worth >$1300 (price delta) to everyone.
