I'll say! http://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
So, knowing your reputation for training a wee bit on the hard side (colossal understatement) - I'm curious - why 2008 and not say, 2007? Or is the event not held annually??Oh, I'm riding it in 2007, but as a "practice ride." I'm also planning to do the Death Ride in 2007 (basically the first day of the Everest Challenge). If I don't make it into the (Death Ride) lottery, I'm going to go ride the course with 4-5 of my closest fellow maniacs.:D
P.S., I used the term "practice ride" this past weekend with a buddy who knows the course and he laughed and said, "Wow! 29 thousand feet in 2 days as a practice ride. I like the way you think."

I love it!:D
And I'm serving advance notice to those who intend to ride the Everest Challenge in 2008 in the 65-69 category. I will have just turned 65 and I'm coming to race!:DWow I just plugged the data into my excel file:
120 miles
15465 feet of climbing
6 hours ride time (the winning time this year)
180 lbs (INCLUDING BIKE)
= FTP 365 W!!!!!!!!
If you weigh 225lbs (with bike) it climbs to FTP= 421W !!!
RD what is the highest recorded FTP that you have ever heard of ?

RD what is the highest recorded FTP that you have ever heard of ?I don't have the numbers in front of me, but IIRC someone calculated that Boardman put out ~450W on his hour ride and I think there was a TdF stage in which someone estimated Indurain's FTP at ~450W. I suppose Armstrong must have had a TT stage with similar numbers, but I don't think he rode them with his PM. Some day soon we will have a virtual museum of PM files from key rides in key races.

I hear there's a good shrink available at the Death Ride (just past the finish line).:D

I'm guessing the first "form", this so-called shrink will have you fill out, as part of new patient process of course, is what, the 2008 entry form? http://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

If you weigh 225lbs (with bike) it climbs to FTP= 421W !!!That's why I'm as focused on losing weight as I am at increasing my FTP. BTW, I think I have hit upon something that works (for me). Basically, I eat every 2 hours from 6AM to 10PM. I just don't eat much each "meal." The short duration between each meal makes it easy to defer eating in between because it's just not that long until I get to eat something so I can easily just put food out of my mind until "mealtime." It's working. I'm only 15lbs from my short-term target (160). I'm envious of Andy's weight (~150) and I'm only 1" taller.

You just go right ahead mate - I think I'll stick to my little ho-hum 4000 foot climbs and drag-racing trucks from stop lights :)

Hey - I read that it was a little over 500 watts for Indurain & Boardman's hour-record rides - ...This paper: http://www.midweekclub.ca/articles/broker98.pdf estimates Boardman's 4000 meter individual pursuit power to be just under 500 watts for the 4 minutes and 11 seconds it took him. If you buy these numbers there's no way he was over 500 watts for the hour record.

If you buy these numbers there's no way he was over 500 watts for the hour record. If those are correct, for a 4 minute period, then I'd agree, 500 is entirely too high for an hour.
Here's what I found:
12. What does it take to be Lance Armstrong, Chris Boardman or Miguel Indurain? (http://<font%20face=)
In terms of power, Chris Boardman averaged an estimated 442W for his hour record in 1996. When Miguel Indurain broke the same record previously in 1994 he averaged 505W. Both about 6.5W/kg.
Lance Armstrong’ winning time of 38min and 1 sec climbing the L’Alpe d’Huez in the 2001 Tour de France required a power output of 6.5W/kg. However his was achieved at the end of a 200km with other major climbs.

I'm just thinking, if LA did 6.5 w/kg in 2004 on the Aple d'Huez TT after a number of difficult stages in a 3 week race, which would be somewhere around 450-475 watts depending on his weight - then 500+ for Indurain for the hour record while fresh, seems believable.
I'm not vested in the results either way, it is more of a curiousity.

There'd be less traffic on the course if he'd move to the starting line. :)

I’ve been reading this post for a long time but almost never posted myself but now I need an insight from you guys. I have a bad knee and will be going for an x ray in the next week but I’m sidetracking.
I HOPEFULLY will be going back to training in a few (3-4) weeks. But lately I have been doing a Tyson but reversed 4 months ago I had and ftp of aprox 200 watts but with my lack of training because of my knee I dropped radically. But what I wanted your input for is when I return to training should I start a plan like you guys with lot of l4 workouts or should I take it easy l2 for the returning to training.
I don’t how many of you guys had injuries but just a heads up, it really f** up your mind. Like most of you (I believe) I wake up thinking of cycling I’ve reanalysed my trainer rides of earlier this year to exhaustion and not be able go on the bike (I aggravated it because of trying to ride before the pain go away) when I started training with power and was expecting improvements…

You seem to have thought this through. If you want to be riding harder next season then you have to solve this recurring knee problem. You are going to get some medical advice on how to deal with this next week and getting this help is the best thing that you can be doing now to improve your power IMO. Won't your doctor give you the best advice on how hard to go and how soon to go hard when you return to training?
Have you had an experienced bike fitter take a look at your riding position to see if there is anything going on with your shoe cleats, seat height, seat fore-aft position that might be aggravating your knees?
All of this can seem preliminary and wasted time in terms of doing "real training." I think the time you spend now trying to understand the causes of the knee problem and correcting it is the foundation that you have got to build first and do well. Establish this foundation well and the L4's later will accomplish something. Rush this foundation now and all of those L4's later are going to be perched on a deck of cards that will come tumbling down. Good luck!

Was your knee injury cycling related? Or was is it just not able to heal because cycling aggrivated it? That makes a big difference as to how likely the problem will return.
I feel for you though because I know its much harder to set your mind to NOT cycle(or eat, or rest) than it is to get motivated to push yourself. If you have a history of not allowing yourself to heal then its going to require some serious discipline to take it easy at first.

But what I wanted your input for is when I return to training should I start a plan like you guys with lot of l4 workouts or should I take it easy l2 for the returning to training.I haven't worked out the effective stress (i.e., equivalent weight in a leg extension type of exercise), but it can't be very great even at your prior FTP. I think the question is, "What is required for your knee to be able to handle the actual loads of riding at 200W and what exercises will allow you to strengthen the knee to handle such loads?" The loads don't seem very great to me (<50lbs?).
