Seems like some people are offended about being behind or overtaken by someone with panniers. I mean, just the other day when riding to work I had a guy on a mtb who seemed obsessed with getting in front of me. Came past me within a couple of cm at a light change, slowed down then pulled off to the footpath because he got freaked out by a truck and then rushed to pull back in front of me and then slowed down again. This all within a couple of hundred metres. It seems to happen quite regularly, as soon as you pass someone on bike and you are riding with panniers, some kind of race is on. Twats.

I have noticed that too. I chalk it up to competitive instincts and pride. Some people just can't stand being passed (bested) by a cyclist on an "inferior" bike. Obviously, the guy on the loaded touring bike CAN'T be faster than me, right?
The same thing happens to me when I pass poseurs on $5k carbon fiber bikes while riding my steel triple.
That said I do have a pet peeve about someone passing me and then slowing down. I usually return the favor and then drop them like a stone.

Some cyclists are total jerks. They piss me off, they piss you off, and they also piss off pedestrians and motorists and give us all a bad name.

I have an inferior bike and I get a few "chasers" on my tail. I take them as a compliment, since I am giving them something to aim at: my 25$ rear wheel!

You know what, that happens to me on my morning rides. I get passed by panniers. But whatever, doesnt bother me. I think to myself, "you know, Ive been riding about 25 miles or so on hills, and he probably just pulled out of his driveway. Of course he'll pass me at the end of my ride"
i dont let it get to me.
