Hi Brf, Tony Bell told us about this one. Your mate Alan Nichols was delivering pop and drinks to a place in Salford. He saw some yobs breaking in a van to nick the Sat-Nav system. Alan went out and tackled them and got a good kicking for his troubles. He ended up in hospital for several days with cracked ribs etc and a broken finger. He doesn't live in Ponte, he now lives in Runcorn.
Bastards. The other day some yobs nicked a bike off someone and stabbed him to death, that was also in Salford.

Ah, heres a story that I expect will result in at least 3 swear words! Anyway, abotu a week before my mum phoned up Jeff, and he advised her not to let me do it, so she didn't. Anyway, on the day that the Audax was on, I went for a ride (Day after GHS), Jesus I was pretty knackered, and I had only done something like 27 miles. Doe's this show the sort of effort Iput in on Saturday? Ibeat the guy in second by about a minute, and caught all of my minute men, before the halfway point! So personally I think it was a bit better that I didn't do it, though, there will be more opportunities later in the year for this sort of event, like in the off-season.
Do you know of Adam Blythe and Mark Cavendish, they keep in touch with me. The difference between you and them is that they do as they are told, whereas you don't. Where can I find this GHS result? I'm not a bloody mindreader.

Yeh Okokokokokok. What does your mother know about bike racing? And as for that Jeff phoning your Mum up. I've never heard that one before, and I'm 62. BRF's Mum just said 'Keep riding son', and he still is a great rider. And I just used to bugger off riding every minute I could. Now do 100miles tomorrow will you?

Adapted what exactly? and you don't post up your weekly mileage, or how you did it etc. When we say 'Jump' you must jump without questioning orders.
Just you remember that Dave is a friend of mine, and he'll have a lot on his plate with the new track being built in London. He won't have time for bums who don't do as they are told.

Just back from a 207 mile round trip : yesterday we had some great weather,
so I tried to do the 100mile in 5 hour thing. Failed again : I managed to get 95
miles in 5 hours, the weather was really humid and warm here. Eventually did 103 miles in 5 hours 19 mins.
Stayed over in my brother in laws place last night and did the same distance back today : again another real warm day here.

Hope you're all enjoying LeTour.

Old heroes.
If you get a chance, have a look at t-day's Sunday Express, page 20, 21. There are three interviews with golden oldies from the 1948 Olympics - two of them with cyclists - Alan Bannister and Tommy Godwin.

Brief but worth a look.

Cheers,

John:)

hi there ""bravo""you are certainly getting them in.. keep it up... rode the french national veterans championship yesterday,, what a race, 80 kims of mayemm. there were 6 chutes, one quite bad, 20 blokes fell off, and over 12 punctures, all on michelin pro race tyres.. just what is going on,, have you see the tour stages , lots and lots of punctures,, very strange.. me well i was on my new corima areo full carbon wheels with luverly new tubulars stuck on... oh so smooth and sweet, its over 25 years since i RODE tubs, and what a difference..the whole wheel setup icluding wheels/tubs/dura ace block is LESS than 2 kilo's.... and they look great too... oh the race, finished in the peleton, 6 guys got away on a tricky bit of road, but i must say there is a big gap from a 50 years old to over 60 year old guy, at times it was just "on the rivet stuff",,, still rode well ,stayed upright and finished well up...mmmmmmmm now the worlds in august,, ytd 8660 kms. bon courage.

hi there,, sorry i wanted to add... there is a new SMELL in the peleton these days, no not sweaty socks or arm pits, its the smell of BURNING WOOD, yes the guys who are on carbon wheels, HAVE to use brake blocks made of CORK,, and when you brake HARD, the cork burns or should i say scorches, and you get this smell burning of wood all around you.in the peleton...very strange.. bon courage.

The memories that triggers! In the late 1940s and early 1950s I often helped marshal the dead turn of the G15 "25" course at Wick (Littlehampton).

A few people were still riding wooden sprints, and the air was always heavy with the stink of rubber as the brake blocks burned.

On top of that, the world was so quiet that you could hear the change in the roar of a rider's sprints and tubs as he left smooth tarmac and ran onto cross-tamped concrete - out of sight, and still well over a mile away.

Not any more!
:)

hi there.. yes i remeber those "cane sprints", when i rode the grass track at rounday park in the late 50 early 60,s all the top men rode them,,, they looked oh so good, all bright and lots a shelac (?) on them,, i presumed they shelac'ed (?) the tubs on, then gave the wood rims a coat for good measure.. i still see them being offered on ebay, my other memories, "oh no", were those beautiful largew flange HARDEN HUBS or ARDEN / once again a joy to see,, i had a pair built up on conley (?) profile rims,, do you remember them,, shiny large profiles rims in the 50/60,, the problem with the hubs was that the fixed wheel threads were "cut" onto the alloy hub and yes you've guessed, they stripped...... and then usually binned.. years later when i worked in the engineering field, we could have machined the old threats off, and fitted a "new" cog carrier.. still there you go... whats new.. nowt.. bon courage..

Hi Biker : good going there my friend in the Vet's : of course you're gonna get the eyeballs out brigade blasting away from the off, so to get a result across 50-60 year old range is very good going.

Yeah, been watching the TDF : good stage yesterday when Vino and kloden tried the old one/two.
At least riders are prepared to attacks Armstrong and make the race a bit more competitive.
I think LA is struggling a bit this year : his team fell away from him yesterday.
Great stage today though - seeing Rasmussen win.
I love seeing those blokes go for a solo and when it comes off, all the better.

Yeah, I'm getting the miles in : but have been dying today. Dehydration I reckon.
The heat here has gone up a few notches. Yesterday I ran out of water and had to do about 20 miles before I could get to a shop/roadside garage to refill my bidon. The temp on my clock was at 29c - and it's very very humid too.
Woke up thi morning and it felt like I'd been on the beer all last night (which I was wasn't).
I reckon that 20 mile stretch was the culprit.
I'll know the next time !

Hope all's well on your side.

hi there, going back onto punctures.. i am amazed that so many riders puncture today on wired ons.. just look at the tour, every 20 mins or so, another puncture.. on the clubs runs i go on down here, my own and my wifes touring club, punctures are an accepted part of the ride... hell i remeber the old wolber juniors going on and on for ever if you looked after them, i wonder if today the "new breed" (sic )of riders just aim the bike in a straight line and ride it.. over pot hole or glass,, i get home on may occasion and am amazed at the standard of the ridingi have seen.. its just so poor....but the french have never had a "club run background" i am sure you had the clip around the back of the head if you even dared to PASS the club run captain, when HE was on the front...great days now gone.. bon courage...........

Hey,

Fred/BRF, you are absoloutly right, my mum knows abosoultly nothing about bike racing, but thinks shes and expert.....And thinks she can tell me how to do things.....

Lots of hard hilly/powertraining over the weekend, something like 50 on sat, and 80 something today, will check out the actual distances.

There may have benn fewer miles, but they were hard ones.

BRf,

I am 14, and won my age group....

25 mile race at Eastway next weekend on Sat.

Temperature has gone scorching hot here, and the sun burn trend has started once again.

Very nearly ended up in a bush with no rear wheel, as I hit a pothole about 2 feet deep, my saddle bag went flying but the bike was ok.

Decent turnout for the clubrun today, about 10 met at the club hut, then we met five other chelmer riders at the cafe, and some Bsihops stortford riders, and went with them.

Thanks Phil
