He's not clueless at all, he just didnt realise that Ihad been racing the day before, and wasn't at best form before the trial. He is very good coach and racer, and ment well.

Anne is in the ladies team in Chelmer, she is fast too.

When I got to the 40mile mark, I was told to phone home and get pciked up, I said I will try and continue but they told me to wait to get picked up.

Something that really annoy's me in England is that I am not allowed in Gym's.
Im under 16, therefore, they will not let us touch the equiptment.

G'day Fred, I'll bear that in mind, however I'll probably have to go to one of those internet cafe' places as none of my relatives own a "New Fangled Device". Most still live in the 20th century?

War and Peace now that is a good read, I've just been given a book (old one ) called "Stoker's Submarine" by Fred & Elizabeth Brenchley, I'm informed it's a good true storey, courage and Australia's involvement at the Gallipoli Peninsula, via a submarine.

Apart from that, as a famous general who came to Oz during the second world war, plus "BIG ARNY" of course, once said, "I'LL BE BACK"?

Good luck with eurosport, I'll endeavour to get a look during the time in the old country?

Catch yer round? TBC
Look there you go again. Well my Uncle was on HMSS Titan in the North Sea when they torpedoed and sunk an Ozzy boat because they couldn't work the radio coms. Blah blah blah blah. Now pack it. Now bloody wonder I have a go at you. God help your bleedin' relations when you get back over here.

Go and have a game of tenpin then, mind you we used to sit around playing cards. One needs a little change of mind. You'll be OK. Did Anne pack it in after 40miles?
When BRF were nobbut knobbly kneed lads, there were no phones and you had to make your own way home contemplating the stupidity of decisions.
Stagecoaches were not allowed to pick up cyclists because they frightened the horses.

Something troubling me.

I had a chat with the local club here last week and they asked me to volunteer my services for their Tues/Thurs training schedules.
They've got every type of cyclist for the Tues/Thurs sessions.
Elite, Junior, Long distance tourers and new members.

I don't mind being asked to help - so I went along tonight.
The Elites did their own thing, which was fine.

So I stuck with the others and they were being coached by these two guys.
They were advocating "the method" - so that was fine.
But then they started talking about suitable gearing for "the method".
Maybe I'm losing me marbles, but isn't the concept of "the method" to try to improve pedalling, rpms and to eventually improve performance ?
These "coaches" were talking about people using 52x13 gears and the like.

In my day, I was told to pedal in a gear, say 39x17 or 39x19, at nothing less than 90rpm for a two hour training spin.
The idea being that your system would become accustomed to pedalling and that your cycling fitness would improve.
And as you got stronger, you then increased the gearing in subsequent training sessions.
52x13 at not less than 90rpm, isn't the method that I learnt with but there you go.
Maybe times have moved on.

Nope, Anne didnt pack it in, shes was ok with it, but wasnt at the pace Anthony set, thats why we rode together, and picked up other riders along the way, about fifteen or so.

And also her car was parked 40 miles away at the start in Brentwood ;)

Cheers Phil

Times have moved on, but riding around on 53x13 will never get anyone anywhere. You have to develop over a long time to use this on a lone individual basis to any effect, and then the results certainly won't be guaranteed.
Now you get yourself round there with a few Roche videos. Look we used to do 5hours a day on 42x16, and we were getting paid for it. OK we might have gone up a notch or two but we were training at 23mph during this time, day in and day out. No OUTSIDE RING.
Stephen was a beautiful pedaller.
LA is a good pedaller since he changed, and Ullrich is a thrutcher with no adaptability. Get the lower cats to ride.
Speed isn't everthing when you are training. RPM and the hours time counts for a lot more for the basis.

You've borne out what I thought.
52x13 - try keeping that going at +90rpm.
I wouldn't even contemplate it.

I told that lot that they were wrong to be telling people to try to push these
size gears.
On your 39/40 chainring, use 17 or maybe 15 sprocket, and use 90rpm.
That's the way I was taught.
RPM's.
Just pedal.

I told you about the time SR came training with us back in 1983 : pedalled
from Dublin - Gorey - Dublin, using the same gear throughout.
Fantastic to watch and a great way to learn how to cycle.
We were in awe anyway - but when we saw him do this, well it was the icing on the cake to a youngster like me and my pals.

I agree LA's pedalling is very very good to watch as well.

Ullrich is a big gear cyclist : I'd hate to have his knees in 10 years time.

I don't know the club, but it looks as if you'll have to start again.
make a start on the youngsters and get the big gear idea out of their heads.
Tell 'em pros don't train like that. It'll be good fun, keep banging on about famous Irish riders and pedalling.
I think the daft idea comes from major pros riding in TT's on big gears, and the likes of the big finishers sprinting on dustbin lids 54x11. Even they can only keep it up for a short time, and that's after a lead out.
Anyway, I popped a nasty one off to Simon Reed, I've done with Francois for the moment, his hands are tied. I'm sending one off to Vena Joory, if and when SR replies, about the Paris-Roubaix slot. Then I'll be doing the big cheese Patrick Chasse, remember him racing? Omloop Het Volk this weekend weather permitting. I can see the size of the goosepimples already.
It's one of those 'why am I doing this' races, when I could be a train driver.

Yeah, i'm happy with it. Also, ordering some new wheels, should be better than the stock ones.

Won't be on the bike this weekend as i'm in France, on a school trip, to see the war graves, and Omaha Beech, ETC. Might see BRF!
So while i'm away im putting my bike in for the routine service. Just a bit worried as a chip of plastic peeled off the rear jockey wheel after racing yesterday. Would I need to purchase a new one? And is it okay like it?

Cheers Phil

If you go to Arromanches ( that's the high bit) you've got to go to the cinema in the round. It's one of the few in the world that does total surround film. BRF lives at the other end of the country in the nice bit, but I used to race a lot in the shitty weather bit where you are going. Normandy and Brittany. Anquetil was from Normandy, and Hinault was from Brittany. Nice people though. Now let me think about that jockey wheel, I'd just scrape of all the plastic bits if they are only for decoration and leave it to see what happens. If the plastic cover is where the bolt goes through it only scrape off the bits that you can see because the inside bit is a acting as a shim washer.

A good few years ago I got dragged all around that area, the cinema was good though, very clever.
Now don't be taking too much notice of BRF, he's only jealous that he's not 14 again and starting a new bike racing career. His barks worse than his bite, or is that the other way round?

The race was U14 8 Laps at Eastway. The plastice peeled off the rear jockey wheel.

The stock wheels are Gipemme T304's.

Also in the results list on British Cycling they spely my name wrong!
