OTB and broken collar bone

hi , 2 days ago i was jumping and fall over my bike bar,
in result i broke left end of my collar bone, (last 2 cm of bone cracked)
it is clear, no pieces of bone anywhere, but bone moved little up.

i live in Poland but used to live in US so i can clearly say that polish
medical service is far from being perfect .

After few Rtg's Orthopedist (who is friend of my brother also MD - i got
special treatment in hospital) decides to put mi in something called here
Dassault bandage - kind of plaster immobilizer that cover you completly on
your left side with my arm close to my belly so only my hand is out and
covers my left shoulder and goes across my chest.it is to remain there for 4
weeks after that rehabilitation.

now i know how medieval knights felt in their armor.

my question is- did anyone had similar accident and how they treated it in
his/her country, what do you think about what they did to me, (any ideas
how they could do it better?) and generally everything that you can advise
me in this sad situation......

I had a very similar break two years ago, in the same location as
yours. They gave me a sling to use for two weeks -- I used it for
only one. Two weeks after the break, I was sent to physical therapy
and did twice-daily exercises. My mobility came back within another
two weeks.

Four weeks is a *very* long time to keep a shoulder immobilized.
Physical therapy is going to be brutal after that long, as your
range of motion will be very limited from the lack of joint movement.

I broke my right collarbone last year in an accident. Different break
though - mine was toward the middle and my collarbone is now v-shaped.
I experienced nerve damage to some muscles in my arm. I immobilized the
arm in a sling for four weeks. The hardest part of recovery was
reducing the nerve damage and rebuilding atrophied muscles in the arm.
It felt like someone skewered me with hot needles.

Plaster casts are not commonly used for collarbones anymore in the U.S.
, according to my doctor. They are far too uncomfortable, and most
people regain 100% of their motion even if the bone is not shaped
properly without a cast. A cast would be used for bones that are
shattered or otherwise REALLY need to be immobilized.

It sounds like you have no nerve damage. If so, feel good because
recovery is just a matter of doing a little therapy and basic exercises.
I am very glad I had the therapist, instead of just exercising myself.
The therapist massaged the muscles around my humerus to clavicle joint
and relieved the pent-up tension. This accelerated the healing.

Typing with one hand sucks, doesn't it?

Hi,

I broke my collar bone three weeks ago when a car broadsided me on my
roadbike. I jumped up on the hood to prevent injury, but when the driver
stopped, I rolled off the front of the car, landed on my shoulder, and broke
the collar bone. The last 1.5-2 inches of the collar bone snapped off. I
had surgery over a week ago and now have a titanium plate and seven screws
holding my collar bone together. My hope is that rehabilitation and
recovery will be quick so that I can get back on the bike soon.

You should have gone with carbon -- better road feel. :)
