Trek 5500 Question

Just got a new Trek 5500 and have one question. When out of the saddle
climbing I have a ticking noise, twice per revolution at about 2 o clock
(Crank Position) when I apply force. Seems worse from the right side. Dealer
has no idea. I have changed my grip from the dropouts to the hoods and even
tried to put minimum pressure on the bars but it is still there. Any ideas ?
No problems when in the saddle.

I had a simular problem with at brand new Shimano Ultegra bottom bracket -
I found the solution described on the Shimano homepage: A minimal
tightening of the bottom bracket (after removing the right crank) solved the
problem.
If that's what it is, I think it is pretty normal for a new bike.

Coupla things it could be:

1. The tab on the zipper on your jersey swinging against the zipper -
don't laugh, it could happen to you, it did to me.

2. Chainring bolts - sounds likely. Take 'em out, lube the threaded
sleeve inside and out, re-install and tighten down good.

3. Crankset - remove and re-install to mfr torque.

4. Brakes too close to rims for your extreme power. Release the QR's
on your brakes and try climbing.

5. Slightly loose spoke. Go downhill and simultaneously brake and
pedal standing (max power). If creak does not occur, it is in a spoke
as the braking will tension the spokes, eliminating the "tick".

Since you say the noise is from the right side, are you sure it isn't the
front derailleur hitting either the chainring or chain? Everything might
work fine in the stand, or under low pressure, but when push comes to shove
(sometimes literally!), your chainrings deflect a bit, and things that
otherwise have plenty of clearance are suddenly hitting.

I am not luck enough to have a Trek 5500, but I did have a drive train
ticking sound that was making me crazy. It finally went away after I
tightened my pedals.

My stem sounded like that on my 5200. Maybe more of a qnirk than a tick, but
it was twice per revolution. Only when climbing out of the saddle. Took it
apart, cleaned and greased it a bit. Then carefully tightened it to specs.

Proper install of BB-grease into cups.

Grease on crank flats, chainring bolts

Grease onto freehub body, cogset tight

And the most probable-swap the pedals, ride w/o cycling shoes...these noises
are most often pedals/cleats/shoes...

Good point, and don't forget to check to make sure the pedals themselves are
tight in the cranks. Once in a while we come across that, but only after
substantial amounts of hair have already been pulled, looking at every other
possibility.
