I have an old 93' Bridgestone RB1 built up with Shimano road stuff. Can I
convert this roadbike into a cyclocrosser? If so, what do I need besides
tires? TIA.

Hell yeah, give it a go. You may have some problems with clearance with
tires. Probably would a cross fork, other than a road fork, to get the
tire clearance you need. The rear brake bridge may have clearance probs
as well. Maybe someone else with experience converting a road bike to
cross can speak for the clearance issues if this is even worth it to
you. Worst case scenario, if you really have to do it is to get a
framebuilder to take off the brake bridge and re-braze for clearance and
add on some canti posts.

After that part, which is probably your most serious issue, get some
Canti brakes. And those adapter things to mount them. A company called
Paul makes some good ones.

Do it, I agree with BaCardi. Also, bstone used more clearence on
cahinstays and fork so you could use wider tires. ait would also make
a great racing bike.

Recommend you ride a few trails first. I did two endos in ten minutes
hitting 4" soft dirt rises that my other road bikes would roll right
thru. It's easy to experiment to see how your RB1 is going to handle.

Well, it's a road bike and less than ideal for 'cross. However, I
raced 5 seasons of 'cross on an old Raleigh Super Course- all I did
was put on some 700 x 28 knobbies and raise the bars a bit. You
could probably do much the same with the RB-1. Or, if the RB-1 is in
good shape, you could sell it and buy a 'cross bike.
