Question on replacing Shimano Exage LX stuff

I've got a really old mtn bike with a 7spd triple Shimano Exage LX400
rd, LX300fd and shifters with a 7spd cassette/chain. Anyhow, the
shifting is pretty much shot and I want to replace the shifters, rd
and fd - can I use 8spd stuff on my 7spd cassette or do I need to stay
with 7speed stuff ? I don't want to spend too much.

8-speed shifters generally work OK with 7-speed cassettes, but you=20
probably donl tneed all that stuff. Poor shifting is usually the=20
result of either misadjustment or cable friction.

If you are going to replace parts, the first thing to try is the cables=20
and housing.

Some time ago I was given by a friend an old Cadex ALM1 Mountain Bike. From
the Deore components I'm guessing it must come from the early 90's. An
interesting bonded (rather than welded) aluminium frame.

Does anyone remember anything about them. Neither the Giant site nor Google
seem to be of much help.

Cadex bikes came with various tubes (carbon fibre, steel, and aluminium)
bonded into cast aluminium lugs. There were road and mountain models, and
the carbon-tubed models were the most popular. Several other manufacturers
(Raleigh/Dynatech, Trek, Specialized) used similar construction at the same
time, before welded aluminium came to dominate the market. Early to mid
nineties would be right.
