Some people who move to Texas from New England and other foreign places adopt
the boots/hat and some don't.

As to "fake ranches", I overheard a story in a restaurant: A local had sold a
"ranch" to an outsider. After the sale was concluded, the buyer asked the
seller if he had ever made any money on his place. "Why yes," was the answer,
"just now when I sold it to you!".
