carbon fiber bars???

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

I'm looking for a good set of riser bars. I only want about a 1" rise.

I never owned carbon fiber bars. Are they strong/stiff enough for some cross
country/freeride type of riding? If they get scratched or nicked, do they
have to be replaced? Has anyone ever have them break during normal use?

I'm putting them on a Fisher Cake 2 dlx & I weigh approx. 215 lbs.

The only bars I've ever seen that have broken have been carbon. You'll
hear lots of excuses about not using old style "sharp edged"XTR
shifters, not overtightening your stem, using bar ends ,how someone
has been using them for years etc etc, but for such a crucial part its
just not worth the risk for the small weight saving/ supposed damping
effect, especially if you weigh over 200lbs.
That goes for posts too.... and cranks.... and frames, in fact
everything except tennis rackets and headset spacers.

I use a set of Easton carbon risers on my hardtail. I've never had a problem
with them, I only use them for XC. If you're planning on doing any jumping
or "freeriding", get something more sturdier made from alu. Carbon bars
aren't meant to take abuse. I saw a DH'r snap his in half on a ride, he was
dumb to put them on his bike in the first place.

Carbon no way. But I did snap a motorcycle handlebar.
They were Ape- hangers. And it was done with my bare hands before I
hit the car that pulled out in front of me. That was in 78. The bars
were steel and crome plated. So I would not go carbon anythng.

If you're really hot on having carbon risers, I'll sell you my 1" rise
Answer carbon bars. I have ridden on them very little, only XC, never
been down (bought them Sept. last year.) The ends have not been cut
down (original width.)

Make me a reasonable offer: rfjonesy *at* hotmail *dot* com.

Why would I want to get rid of them? Because someone else wants them,
and because aluminum is a better choice for bike bars. I like the
bars pretty well, but will go with Easton EA 1" risers one way or
another. Get them from me before I put them on eBay.

I have an ex wife, so the bars. I've heard too many bad things about the
carbon bars since I bought mine. It takes the fun out of riding, while
preoccupying my mind, wondering if it's going to snap.

Thanks for everyone's input. I decided to go with Answer ProTaper Alum.
bars. A couple grams isn't going make much of a difference for me. I
probably saved a couple dollars too.
