Flying into San Francisco on Wednesday

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

We are flying into San Francisco on Wednesday, have seven
weeks, to find the most fun singletrack in California. We
will bike between places and have a list that includes,
Henry Coe Park, Mammoth, Yosemite, Tahoe, Downiville, Sierra
Buttes, Lassen, Boggs Mountain, Oat Hill mine trail, and
Annadel. Does anyone have anymore suggestions, particularly
for the area around San Francisco? We will stay there a
couple of days when we arrive to overcome the jetlag, etc.
Utterly grateful for suggestions.

Since you're in SF you should probably at least make a
pilgrimage to Mt Tam. I have no idea what, if any, legal
singletrack is in the area but it is where all those Marin
County hippies got their start mtn biking and the view is
incredible.

If Pete F has the time to respond he'll have the best
suggestions.

After San Francisco I'd highly recommend heading up Redwoods
Natl Park. Pete's done some killer riding north of San
Francisco off of Hwy 101. And there is some legal
singletrack in Redwoods Natl Park, not much, but the trees
sure as hell make up for it.

We are absolutely going, we rode an afternoon in Marin
county in 99, had just one afternoon, mostly fire road, and
some fun singletrack, not much though.

I'll second the mandatory Mt. Tam experience. There's no
great legal single track, but the views of the north San
Francisco bay area are very nice from the top. It should be
getting hotter by the time you'll arrive, so early-ish
starts at Oat Hill, Annadel and Bogg's might make those
outings more enjoyable if you're not acclimated to the
warmer weather.

If you need a nice beach break (pun intended), head south to
Santa Cruz and catch Skegg's/El Corte de Madera along the
way. My two cents is go ride Skegg's and visit Santa Cruz
vs. Bogg's and Lake County, but that's just my vote.

Are you bringing the roadie rigs? If so, remember that the
north bay is part-time home to Levi Leipheimer for a reason.

No, we will ride our MTB hardtails, pulling BOBs between
places with singletrack, but no singletrack with the BOBs.

I'm not so sure that Bogg's is worth the road burn to
ride...if I were you I and I was determined to ride Bay Area
stuff, I would head North to Santa Rosa for Annadel, then
East into Napa for Oat Hill, and then continue on.

Hwy 29 betweenn Calistoga and Middletown/Bogg's is NOT
cyclist friendly being narrow, having no shoulder,
many blind turns and lots and lots of RVs and idiot
redneck drivers.

On your Marin rides, you can hook into a nice bit of
singletrack by incorporating Tamarancho (http://www.boyscouts- (http://www.boyscouts-/)
marin.org/camps/fot.htm) into a ride.

A long ride that includes Bolinas Ridge and some of the
singletrack at Point Reyes National Seashore would also be a
good choice.

Let me know when you get to the Annadel area and/or Oat Hill
area and if you're interested in company/local guide I'll
carve some time out and meet up with you.

We´ll fly in, stay in a hotel (Golden Gate, Bush St.) a
couple of days to wind down, get over the jet lag, look
around a bit and enjoy being there, and then decide which
way to go. Of course we like o bike in Annadel and on Oat
Hill, either now or in late August when we return to SF.

I appreciate the imperative on their map: "Bikes must stay
on singletrack"
