Track Pedals

Just wondering what everyone uses pedal wise,im looking at getting some pedalsand do not like toe straps.I used to use Keywins but have heard Shimano SPD-R's are good.???

I finally made the change from straps only a couple of years ago and i find that the SPD-R's are excellent. They are virtually impossible to get out of when done up tight and thus are handy for most track events involving big kicks and fast acceleration. I highly recommend them.

Beauty thanks for that,id heard the same thing,that the SPD-Rs were almost impossible to get out of when tightened right up. Do you know if there is a difference to the SPd-Ss???

I have ridden the SPD-SL only once on a test ride and didnt particularly like the feel (not saying it was bad, just an opinion). If i can put it into words i would say they are like a very positive feeling Look pedal. ie. u can feel the width of the platform and the support it provides, aswell as the spring mechanism holding your foot in place, but you cannot tighten them to the same extent that you can tighten the SPD-R's, and then there is the plastic cleat issue (something i dont agree with, regardless of the walking "pontoons")

Good one thanx for that il be using the SPD-R's for shure then.

i dont know why you would stay off straps and clips. They're the best things I've used. You just gotta get the right combination. But thats just my opinion.

There was two main reasons that i decided to change from straps to clipless. 1) straps, when done up as tight as needed for sprinting, were making my feet get sore/numb by the end of a scratch race 2) I just bought a new pair of carbon soled shoes and decided to use them for both road and track to get the most use out of them as possible (basically just convenient)

Which ones are you using??? The 535's,Ultegras or Dura ace??? Ive found some reasonably priced sets and was considering the Ultegras but if the 535s do the job they are a fair bit cheaper.

i use ultegras but have a few mates that tell me their 535's are no different as far as performance goes.....they may even be lighter from memory. if u r on a budget go for the 535, otherwise i think it is mainly cosmetic differences.

sip tie a single strap to the pedal spindles. leave them loose for scratch adn points races, adn crank them down for sprinting, i did that with my speedplay zeroe's. could't give up that feeling of being locked in and not having your foot move around

i had a good stack with spd-sls and my bike stck to me just like it does with straps and clips. from that i trust spd-sls now.

Someone reccomended the Speedplay Zeros to me,i was gonna get some till i found out they are about $340.I can get 2 sets of Ultegra SPD-R pedals for the same price.

As a spriner there are only 2 pedals I would think of racing.
1) the old shimano strap with the little locking plates at the end

2) Keywin with track locks.

To me its a confidence thing, You must have 100% faith in your gear, especially pedals, or you just wont give it death when it counts. I trust both of the above pedals. Pedals that I refuse to use = Look, Time (old ones) and speedplay. Why, because I can rip my foot out of them at will (and not at will, that being the bad part) I intend to try SPD's this winter to see if I can pull out of them too....

I hope that u cant Fixey! I have the greatest respect for these pedals. I pride myself on being able to pull out of most Looks (only other brand i have tried as i discovered SPD-R's a while back). I have a pair of the shimano's that u mention with double "sprint" straps and the little hooks, especially for my sprint events. It is not very often that i feel the need for them any more though.

I Have never used them but u mention the keywin pedals. All i wanted to know was how much plastic of the cleat is holding the foot on the pedal? Is there a chance it could break and u pull your foot?? this is my only fear with plastic cleats. My brother once broke a look cleat in this manner and it has had me worried ever since.

i had some extra on the bottom of that post that didnt come up.

Basically saying that each event has its own specific equipment road/track/tt. it just depends on whether u can afford or be bothered to use this equipment. To my knowledge the general consensus seems to be heading towards slightly longer track cranks. 170 as opposed to 165. I am only talking about general track racing (as opposed to sprints/pursuits)

I pulled my foot out of my keywins once at the start of a wheelrace final.They are good pedals but not outstanding.

340 bones for a pair of zero's? From where? I got mine for 125

Order fromt he States and have them mailed out, you'll wait longer, but save about 100 bucks for sure
