Bike shops in New York City area?
I am new to touring and looking to buy a new bike -- I have read various suggestions (on ACA, Ken Kifer, etc.) about what to look for and which manufacturers are good for touring and so on. But the main suggestion everyone has is to make sure you go to a bike shop that knows and understands touring and doesn't try to sell you a hybrid or mountain bike just because that's what they have. I live in New York City (Brooklyn) -- can anyone recommend a bike shop in New York (preferably in Manhattan or Brooklyn) that understands touring and carries/services/fits touring bikes?
thanks very much!

If variety is what you want, check out the Toga Bike Shop (upper west side) or their smaller sister store, Gotham Bikes (in Tribecca). Great shops. There are certainly other good shops, but these guys have the best selection of road bikes of any shop in Manhattan. There is no chance they are going to try and sell you a hybrid if a road bike is what you need or want. The Toga shop uptown has a ton of bikes.

I ended up going to bicycle habitat and bought a Marin Fairfax. Its called a hybrid, but closer to a road bike. Very light, nice shifting. I rode about 50 mi. last week around the city and so far am happy with it. Margaret, if you are interested in riding around the city, trips to Coney Island or Rockaway, Queens, etc. and are looking for a riding friend email me off list. I usually ride with a friend or two, leisurly pace 12-14 mi p/h on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. That is if you did get that bike yet!

I'm from Brooklyn. Living in SF now. But, I would say try
Roy's
Sheepshead Cycle
(718) 646-9430
2679 Coney Island Ave Brooklyn, NY
They were fairly knowledgeable way back when I used to frequent them (back in the 90's).
Hope that helps.
